Should You Hire Labor-Only Movers or Full-Service Movers?

When you start looking into hiring movers, one of the first decisions you will run into is whether to go with labor-only service or full-service moving. The names are mostly self-explanatory, but the decision has real implications for your cost, your time, and how much you are taking on personally. Here is how to think through which option makes sense for your move.

Full-service moving means the company handles everything: they bring the truck, the crew, and all the equipment. They load, transport, and unload your belongings. You hand over the logistics and the crew handles execution from start to finish.

Labor-only moving means you are supplying the truck or container, and the company supplies the crew. The movers show up, load your rental truck or portable container, you drive or arrange transport, and the crew unloads at the destination. Sometimes labor-only is booked for just one end of the move ,  loading only, or unloading only ,  depending on what you need help with.

Labor-only is a practical choice when you are moving locally and have already arranged or own a truck, when your move is small enough that renting a van and hiring a two-person crew covers the job efficiently, or when you are moving into or out of a storage unit and need help with the heavy lifting on one end.

It also works well for people who are comfortable driving a rental truck and want to save money on the transportation portion of the move. If you are moving a studio or a one-bedroom apartment a short distance, the cost difference between renting a truck and hiring a labor-only crew versus booking a full-service move can be meaningful.

The trade-off is time and coordination. You are responsible for booking the truck, picking it up, returning it, and driving it. If anything goes wrong with the rental, that falls on you rather than the moving company.

Full-service is the right call when you are moving a larger home, moving long distance, moving with a tight timeline, or moving items that require specific handling or equipment. When a crew is responsible for the truck and the transport, there is a single accountable company for the entire move. If something gets damaged or arrives late, there is no ambiguity about whose responsibility it is.

Full-service also makes sense when the time saved is worth the cost difference. Coordinating a rental truck, loading it yourself or with friends, driving it, and returning it takes a full day or more for a larger move. Hiring a full-service crew to handle all of it while you focus on other parts of the transition is a real convenience that has a dollar value.

For long-distance moves specifically, full-service is almost always the better option. The logistics of driving a rental truck hundreds of miles, managing fuel stops, coordinating arrival times, and handling the full process yourself adds significant complexity to an already demanding relocation.

Labor-only is less expensive than full-service because you are covering the truck cost separately. How much you save depends on the size of the move and the rental rates in your area. For small local moves, the savings can be significant. For larger moves or longer distances, the savings shrink once you factor in truck rental, fuel, and mileage fees.

When comparing costs, get quotes for both options and run the full math. A labor-only quote needs to include the rental truck cost, insurance on the rental, fuel, and your own time for pickup and return. A full-service quote covers all of that in one number. The comparison is not always as one-sided as the initial labor-only rate makes it look.

How large is your move? A studio or one-bedroom apartment is a reasonable candidate for labor-only. A three-bedroom house with a garage generally is not. Are you comfortable driving a large rental truck? Not everyone is, and that is a legitimate factor. Is your move local or long distance? The further you go, the more the full-service option tends to justify its cost. Do you have specialty items? Pianos, safes, large sectionals, and other heavy or awkward pieces are easier to manage when the full-service crew is responsible for the whole process.
